The progress you can’t see (but is happening anyway)

The progress you can’t see (but is happening anyway)

Hey there,

“I’m not making any progress.”

I hear this all the time from people working on goals.

They’re showing up consistently. Doing the work. Following through.

But they feel stuck.

Here’s what they’re missing: Progress is happening even when you can’t see it.

The Invisible Progress

Most meaningful progress is invisible in real-time.

Your skills are developing.

Your understanding is deepening.

Your capacity is expanding.

But it’s too gradual to notice day-to-day.

The Daily Blindness

You work on something every day.

Each day feels the same.

You make similar mistakes.

Face similar challenges.

Struggle with similar obstacles.

You think: “Nothing’s changing.”

But it is. You just can’t see it because you’re too close.

The Mirror Effect

Look at yourself in the mirror every day, you don’t notice aging.

But look at a photo from 5 years ago? The change is obvious.

Progress works the same way.

Daily effort feels pointless. Monthly comparison shows massive change.

My French Plateau Period

From August to November 2018, I felt completely stuck with French.

I practiced consistently. I showed up to lessons. I did the work.

But I felt like I was learning nothing new.

I wanted to quit.

Then my tutor showed me a recording from June.

I couldn’t believe how much I’d improved.

The plateau was in my perception, not my performance.

The Underground Growth

When bamboo is planted, nothing visible happens for years.

The bamboo is building a massive root system underground.

Then suddenly, it shoots up 90 feet in 6 weeks.

Everything you’re working on follows the same pattern.

Months of “no progress” are actually building the foundation.

Then suddenly, everything clicks.

The Progress Indicators You’re Missing

You think progress looks like:

  • Dramatic breakthroughs
  • Visible improvements daily
  • Constant forward momentum
  • Never struggling

Real progress looks like:

  • Making NEW mistakes (not the same old ones)
  • Things taking slightly less effort than before
  • Recovering faster when you stumble
  • Feeling slightly less overwhelmed

The False Plateau

What feels like a plateau is often consolidation.

Your brain is integrating what you’ve learned.

Your body is building new patterns.

Your skills are becoming automatic.

This feels like nothing is happening. Actually, everything is happening.

The 90-Day Test

If you can’t see your progress, you’re looking too closely.

Stop comparing today to yesterday.

Start comparing today to 90 days ago.

Take a snapshot today:

  • What feels hard right now?
  • What are you struggling with?
  • Where do you feel stuck?

Save this somewhere you’ll find it in 3 months.

In 90 days, come back to this.

You’ll see progress you can’t see today.

Your Turn

This week, create your progress snapshot:

  1. Write down what feels difficult right now
  2. Note what you’re currently working on
  3. Save it with a reminder for 90 days from now

Trust that progress is happening underground even when you can’t see it above ground.

Progress doesn’t always look like progress. Trust the process anyway.

À bientôt,

Sunmoluwa 😊

P.S. If you’re working on French and can’t see your progress, my French Made Easy course includes tracking that helps you recognize improvement you’d otherwise miss. Because sometimes you need outside perspective to see how far you’ve come.
