When I decided to learn French a couple of years ago, I had so many challenges! The first few weeks after attending classes, I stopped because I had heard another student say she had been taking classes for a year and could barely have a 5 minute conversation! Imagine my horror.
Money cannot waste o… I had no idea how long it would take me to learn, how I would make out time when I had a full time job, how much it would cost me to attain a level of fluency or where I could even find authentic learning materials. I did not understand the tenses, structure, or why the French words had genders. I was terrified of speaking for fear that someone would laugh at my accent or mispronunciation.
Listening was another problem entirely because French people speak too fast. I even tried reading but having to make reference to my dictionary each time just became tiring. And my writing was the worst! I wrote like I spoke and it was incorrect. I made so many mistakes and lost confidence in myself. I started believing the language was not meant for me.
I stopped watching French movies or reading books or listening to songs because it reminded me of something I had failed at. After a long while, I decided to pick it up again and face my fears. I met people who had learned the language right here in Nigeria. I saw the opportunities an extra language gave them. They did not have two heads and I believed I could do it. I started practicing. Slowly and consistently, growing from two times a week to three times a week.
I documented my challenges and successes and used it effectively and eventually mastered the language. I am now able to engage any French speaker and hold conversations at almost any level, have much more immersive travel experiences in francophone countries without inconvenient language barrier, and broaden my network just by being able to speak a language.
